August 12th - Sun Mountain Lodge Tour

Meet at Northgate Mall, west side of the parking lot near Nordstrom at 7:30AM.

Please join us on Sunday August 12th for a scenic drive over the North Cascades Highway to the western-themed town of Winthrop Washington. The day will begin in the morning from our starting location at Northgate Mall. After a short driver's meeting, we will depart Seattle and head north towards our first stop in the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project town of Newhalem which offers an intriguing history of Washington State’s growth during the early 20th century. After Newhalem, the driving and scenery gets more entertaining as we navigate through the twists and turns of Highway 20, past Diablo Lake and over two mountain passes on our journey east.

The destination for the day is Sun Mountain Lodge, a first class resort high above Winthrop overlooking the Methow Valley. We will enjoy a lunch at the lodge and officially end the tour there, but you are encouraged to consider staying the night at Sun Mountain Lodge and enjoying a day in the valley. There is no cost to sign up or attend, and lunch will be separate checks at the Lodge. Details about the exact time, starting location and route map will be distributed to registered attendees prior to the event.

UPDATE: For anyone who needs to commute to Seattle, we will be departing in the morning at 8:00am with a drivers meeting at 7:50am. Stops on the route will include Smokey Point to pick up any folks who want to start the tour further north, as well as Darrington for a fuel stop for any BMWs with big engines or small fuel tanks, or both.

Previous tours to Sun Mountain Lodge included a stop at Smokey Point Rest Stop near Arlington to regroup and allow the folks up north here to join the tour without having to drive down to Seattle. It sounds like that is not happening this year...

This will be fantastic Tour on what is probably my favorite road in the state, Highway 20. Have fun!

Not that i'm complaining - honest. I've been on this tour twice before and was sure we met at Federal Way. I have been known to be wrong, frequently. I'm in Olympia and don't care what time the tour starts, I'll be there. If I can get the wife up in time that is.

Just got back from the lodge yesterday. Spent only one night (had things to do). This is a great getaway. It is the opening of the meteor shower season. The moon will be new, great for star watching, it will probably be cloudless and hot. A nice relief from our marine layer. Oh, and the drive in my Z4 Roadster? I'm still grinning.

All the details for the tour have been sent to registered attendees. I don't have anyone yet who has registered and is planning to meet there, so it's important to RSVP so I can plan accordingly! Send me an email at bmw@pc-resource.com if you want more details.

I prefer not to post detailed information here, or anywhere else, that ends up being incomplete or outdated. Email is the official communication medium for the event. As it is, I dropped the Marblemount stop so the information I posted earlier is already outdated.
