BMW CCA Puget Sound Region
Monthly Board Meeting
March 2, 2000
President Roger Wales called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM at the Lightfoot’s home.
Present at the meeting:
David Lightfoot Lucetta Lightfoot Roger Wales
Bill Spornitz Karl Seeger Greg Mierz
Steve Niver Evie Mercer Lance Richert
Jacqueline Kahn Jim Millet Rick Brown
Opening Comments:
The next meeting will be April 6th at Jim Millet’s home.
Lucetta asked if we should have the meetings at a public place, a set place every time. It was decided to wait for a few months to discuss any change.
Roger made it clear that a change in location is not against the resolution passed which was about changing the date of board meetings.
Lance will continue doing the membership duties until we fill the vacancy of the Membership Chairman. Lucetta suggested asking Tom Cox if he is interested in this position. Lance will contact Tom.
It was stated that Jim Millet would be the advertising coordinator.
Previous Zundfolge advertisers Lee and Diane Hepfer (Horton Performance) are declaring bankruptcy and we are one of their creditors.
Our insurance renewal expires April 1st and we asked for an extension to July 1st. That was okay with the insurance company.
The Jim Lambright Medical Foundation banquet auction wants to auction three 1-session rides at our lapping day event. We will disclose this to our insurance agent and see if it is okay under our coverage. Jacqueline suggests we allow this only during the instructor session at our August driving event. The people participating will need to sign release forms. This will be good "PR" for our club to do this.
General Meetings:
VRM – RSVP’s are coming in.
Griot’s – 88 people attended!
Pre-Grid – Even though John is not there anymore, it will still be fine.
Women’s Tech Day – Lucetta asking for feedback on what women want to be included in this session. It was suggested to have the event from 10:00 AM to Noon.
New Member’s Meeting – Lance suggested we have this at a pizza place in Burien that is catering to car clubs. Bison Creek Pizza located at 630 SW 153rd in Burien has a motor sport theme. The date June 17th was chosen.
June 24th will be the E30 Tech session at Strictly BMW.
Sam Posey is coming to town every so often as a consultant to the SIR renovations. He does speaking engagements and it was suggested we try to use him for an event, possibly a dinner event, when he is here in the area. Don Kitch said we could contact Sam.
30th Anniversary Party - The original Chinese restaurant in Bellevue where the first meeting took place June 4th 1970, is now occupied by the Jasmine Thai & Chinese restaurant. We would like to have our party at this same location, which is at 10713 Main Street, Bellevue, WA. Charter members will get their meal free. The meal will be a buffet at a reasonable cost.
Improvement Ideas:
Charity Coordinator – No response yet from the article in the magazine asking for volunteers. The article will be re-run using Jacqueline’s name to call for a contact person.
Golf Outing – Only three people responded to the article. We need about 30 people to do this event. We will run the article again.
Web Page:
It is really looking good! The ACA/CCA article is outdated and the wrong article written by Roger, not in final form, was used. It will be corrected.
Banquet:
The proceeds were about $2800. Roger made a motion to donate $1250 to Children’s Hospital that was approved. Some banquet ideas for next year were discussed, such as having a gambling event. It was also suggested the charitable event be designated to Mary Bridges Hospital in Tacoma next year.
Concours:
The Robinswood Park looks like a great location. Roger read a report from Bill and Chris Linder. Basically the site is all set with no worries about power and toilets. We will be able to arrange for a photographer. They would like feedback from the Board regarding changing the judging classes this year.
Tours/Karting/Rally:
Karl is getting more information on the wine tour.
Karting – the bulk email was a great tool. Karl is getting lots of responses. People are also asking about other club events. Some people want to come to the Karting event just to meet other club members. The bulk email helped get such a tremendous turnout to the Griot’s event. The Karting event is booked. Karl has trophies all set to hand out. It will be an enduro race, not a sprint.
Rally – have not heard back from Weixler yet. On July 8th the NW Rally Council has scheduled an event. There will be novice and other levels available. We can have teams like a BMW team versus a Porsche team, etc. Other marks are also invited. This event is organized by "Barc" as a car challenge. We will need to publicize this in May and June magazines. There will be a ground school offered by Michael Pahl and Richard Weixler.
Track:
The Instructors Clinic was a success with over 20 new people attending the event. The track walk was well done. Having the rain was beneficial because everyone had to learn to drive in it. There was good information shared in the feedback. The May track school is advertised in the new magazine. Photos taken at the track walk will be used at future schools. That was a good tool. An invoice was sent to Roger regarding damage to the SIR track.
The Laguna article is in the new magazine. There is an error in the registration form regarding the cost of the event. It was suggested that these articles be reviewed by Jacqueline before they go in to the magazine so they may be proofed for accuracy.
Treasurer:
Bill says we have money. If we need a check cut, give Bill the full name and address of the person to whom the check is to be made out to, for Bill’s use. Bill brought up the fact that our computer is not adequate. He needs to keep club stuff separate from his own personal things, thus he cannot use his own computer. Greg made a motion that we upgrade our computer. Karl has a 486 upgraded to PI, that he will donate to the club. Roger wants Karl to accept some form of payment for his computer.
Roster/Membership:
From January to today we have 76 new members. 30 members have not renewed. The total today is 1094 members. Greg has filtered out bad addresses. We now have 400 email addresses. The bulk email is a good resource. Using it with current members only.
Lance reported the comp cards given to renewed members are really nice. These figures are for comp packets given out: 8 in October, 25 in November, 41 in December, 46 in January, 56 in February. There is a mixture of on-line requests and comp cards. There is a BMW Seattle service technician suggesting to customers that if they sign up with our club they will save money on their repair bill. He needs to collect the $25.00 membership fee to ACA before we can give out a member number to the customer.
Zundfolge:
The bulk email once a month may be a good idea. There are amazing things we can do with this tool. The new magazine was mailed two days late due to the holiday in February. The April issue deadline of March 17th was moved up to March 10th, due to a scheduling problem with the publisher. Various covers and features for upcoming issues were discussed briefly.
ACA/CCA Status:
A status report was sent to Keith. There has been no response yet from him.
The general meeting is open to all.
April 6th Board meeting will have the voting procedure information. To become a CCA chapter we need to have a majority vote. Our by-laws say any vote needs a majority. A tie vote stays the same.
Regarding the Board taking a position on the issue, an idea was posed that we, as board members, could share our opinions individually as an additional way to inform the members of the issues. This could either take the place of, or be in addition, to a full board opinion to the general membership.
Whatever the decision turns out to be by the vote, we will support that decision.
We want the members to decide this issue. As Board members we can have different individual opinions.
Members are looking for information on how their lives will change. They are looking for help in making a choice.
It was decided a stipend will be given to Jacqueline for hosting the sub-committee meeting March 14th.
Roundabout:
Roger – Pass.
Lance – keep list of people coming to all events so we can recognize people. At the 3/11 meeting have people sign-in with their club affiliation.
Bill – Wrote check #2002 to K&K Insurance. $33.00 check to Jacqueline for postage.
Rick – Renewal card, thought he was up-to-date. Harbor Club will send us check for incorrect amount charged to us. Bought a condo and furniture and may have a girlfriend.
Karl – Pass.
Lucetta – Has not heard anything from Historic Races. Should have heard by now.
Evie – Unable to attend 3/11 meeting. Will be out of town.
Jacqueline – Bremerton making new sign. Will cost $20 for each club. Cost $10 for calendar. Kahn Team Racing plans to have a link on their website to our club. Can our club website have a link to her website? She is an advertiser in the magazine.
Jim – Pass.
Steve – Pass.
Greg - BMW homepage in Germany has tremendous info to see. Email program open for any info to go out. Wish we didn’t have to merge but sees issue of CCA as reality.
David – "If not broke, don’t fix it" idea is not an option. One way or the other we will be affected as either staying ACA or becoming CCA. Formula 1 Geneva introduced X5 LeMans V12 racecar.
Meeting was adjourned at 10:20PM.
