BMW CCA Puget Sound Board Meeting

July 03, 2003, MICC

President Tom Cox called the meeting to order at 7:05

Presidents Report

News from National: Tom distributed a 3-page summary of national news.

Tom invited Kevin York to brief us on the BMW CCA Foundation Street Survival School.

Kevin York is coordinating the NW Street Survival School targeted for Sept-Oct at either Emerald Downs or Cheney Stadium. The entry fee will be $125. The Foundation picks up the costs of the event, the local chapter (us) provides volunteers. All agreed that this is very worthwhile, and we will work to support the event. Kevin continues his work towards making this event a success.

Also, Kevin noted that the World Health Organization has designated April 2004 as Road Safety Day, and that the club should think about ways to participate.

Treasurers Report

David reports that we are in good shape financially. We have pre-paid for several events, and still have a substantial balance. We have current assets of $74,318.

Past Events

Griot’s Tech session was held with 60 people in attendance, a good event was reported.

E-30 Picnic saw over 80 E-30’s and 1755 people attend for the show and drive.

CPN Rally on Whidbey Island was a success although attendance was drastically down, only 20 cars participated. BMW’s in the rally included, Jamie Thomas (1st Place contemporary division,) Vidur Verma, 1937 327/28 cabriolet, Steve and Annie Norman 1938 327/28 cabriolet, Ken and Susan Olsen 1973 3.0cs (5th place classic division)

Mike Ellis reported on the Greenwood Car Show, only two BMW’s showed up. It was a full event, with cars covering 17 blocks of Greenwood.

2002 Fest – July 27, after the Concours

7-Series detail event will be written up in August ZF

Track

We are in good shape financially for the year, even though Thunderhill was under-subscribed. Novice Day still has openings.

The new format for the instructor clinic received a good response.

Audi and Alfa clubs are in on a purchase of new cones for track. 120 small cones have been purchased.

Collision avoidance lights are nearly done, they will be ready by July 30.

WSP track tech has 18 reservations for 15 slots, a lottery will decide participation.

Walt noted that we have a goal of a 2 to 1 student to instructor ratio, we are reasonably well staffed for upcoming events.

There was discussion of a proposal to purchase instructor shirts to help indentify instructors to students.

ACTION

A motion was made and seconded to buy shirts out of the track budget totaling $2000. The motion was passed by majority, Ken Hill voted against the proposal.

Banquet

De-Anna reports that the Design Center wants a $5,000 minimum for food and beverage, and that we need 180 participants just to break even, this works out to $36 per person. There was a great deal of discussion about the risks involved with those kind of fees in the absence of a known speaker. The concept of having historically significant cars in the dining are was re-considered, as this limits the available locations. Doug Haussler urged caution regarding the expenditure given the weak Puget Sound economy. The Banquet Committee was charged with creating a Plan B for the Boards consideration next month. The Board is to come prepared to make a decision, so that planning commitments can be made.

Concours – Lance reports that it is proceeding as planned. Bill Spornitz has contracted for the trophies, Ken Olsen has 15 judges ready, and Louis HvD is ready with the scoring program.

Zundfolge (ZF) – Lucetta reports that the August deadline is July 8th. We must and will increase print order to meet new membership numbers. August issue is planned for 28 pages. 2 new proofing volunteers have joined the effort.

Roster – 54 new members this month. We are averaging a net gain of approximately 10 new members per month including attrition.

Web Site – Site is being updated. There is lots of Bulletin Board traffic.

Next meeting – KO will supply lasagna from Pasta Nova in Woodinville.

Roundabout – Dale Beuning related the issue of “Brian” on the bulletin board (BB). Poster “Brian” was identified to be disruptive to the BB and was removed from access to the BB. The Board, after discussion, fully supports Dale in his role as moderator, and supports his decision to deny "Brian" access to the BB. It is the Board’s position that the Web Site Coordinator has the authority to monitor the BB for the good of the members, and has the discretion to remove individuals if he feels that it is harmful to the membership as a whole. The Board appreciates Dale’s report on this action to the Board.

Tom Cox adjourned the meeting at 9:10

Respectfully submitted

Ken Olsen,

Secretary
