BMW CCA Puget Sound Board Members, Coordinators and Chairs

Members in attendance

President Tom Cox called the meeting to order at 7:00

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Tom reported that the national Board will be having a planning retreat the weekend of May 10-11. Oktoberfest registration is open as of today, May 1st. News from National also included information about merchandise sales.

Tom also reported that Bill Anderson, the beneficiary of the contribution from our banquet, died before he could receive his transplant. The trustees of the Bill Anderson Transplant Fund suggested giving the money to Bill’s family although each contributor had the option to withdraw their contribution. After some discussion, the Board decided to take no action which will result in the money going to the family.

TREASURERS REPORT

David presented the Balance Sheet as of April 30th along with an aging of receivables from Zundfolge advertisers. Jim Millet is making good progress in collecting from the past dues. The requests for reimbursement from CCA national for postage and printing costs have been received.

Also presented were Excel spreadsheets showing revenues and expenses for track events to date, Zundfolge through April, the karting enduro. The karting event netted $459.20. The Board approved rounding the amount up to $500 and donating the amount to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

BMW CCA Foundation

Kevin York has become involved in the Street Survival School aspect of the BMW CCA Foundation. One of the three missions of the Foundation, a 501(c)3 corporation, is a program to teach driver skills to teenagers. The program is aimed at 16 to 19 year olds and is meant to supplement drivers’ education.

The Foundation is looking for BMW CCA chapters to help make the events possible at the local level. Kevin has been in contact with Dean Killien who heads up the program nationally. The program has the backing of BMW NA and a number of other commercial sponsors, so it is well funded. The admission price of $120 per person includes a one year membership in the Club.

The chapter’s responsibilities would be: finding a location, providing a way to water it down, providing instructors and providing cones. Everything else, including registration and promotion is handled by the Foundation at the national level.

The Board members had lots of questions for Kevin but Kevin has only been involved in this program for about a week. In addition, a large package Kevin expected to receive did not arrive. In any case, what Kevin needed at this point is an expression of interest from the local Board. The Board indicated to Kevin that we are interested in participating.

EVENT REPORTS

Haury’s Auto Body

Jim Millet reported that 48 people repondez s’il vous plait but only 30 showed up. This is the second event Haury’s has hosted where the RSVPs have been far more than the turnout. The tech session itself went very well and there were lots of questions. Jeff Butler did the whole thing himself. There was a new Z4 on the rack. Because Jeff had rented equipment and bought food based on 48 showing up, it was thought that the Club really should help out with expenses. Since Jeff/Haury’s paid for everything at the prior event, the Board votes to reimburse the costs of $169.86 for this event.

6 Series Tech

35 6 Series and 45 people showed up at Strictly BMW. About 20 to 25 continued on to Bison Creek for lunch and videos. Additionally, information on the 6 Series owners was passed along to John Douglas who is forming a 6 Series SIG.

Carb Connection

The dyno event was hosted by Lou Greenberg who had everything well in hand. Tom Olsson reported it was a great event with lots of BMWs.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Track Tech

This event will be hosted by Car Tender on May 10th. There is a promo in the May Zundfolge. Wes will try to clarify parts of the tech form for the Car Tender guys.

Video night

Wednesday 28 May at Bison Creek. The date was moved to be on an all-you-can-eat night. The first promo will be in the May Zundfolge.

Griot’s Tech

E-30 Picnic

Chris Chow reports he has already received 35 RSVPs even though the event isn’t until June 22nd. He has the featured cars lined up. The location is Newcastle Beach Park in Bellevue. The ambitious goal is 100 E30s!

SOVREN Historics

Lucetta reported that we will have 20 spaces for each of three days, July 4, 5 and 6. She was unclear about whether the Board wanted a tent; we do. The Board voted to pay $735 to the SOVREN Guild to reserve our spots. Members will be able to reserve for only one day so we can accommodate 60 members.

Workers Appreciation

Lynn Eskil is chairing the event. No plans yet.

Rallies and Tours

Spring Rally

Was held April 26th. Ken Olsen wasn’t present but several people who participated were present and said it was a good event. Participation was down from last year which meant the cost to the Club was more than expected. There were 30 RSVPs and 29 participated. The net cost to the Club was $641.51.

Bimmerfest

Doug Haussler reported that nine local cars went down. There were over 500 at the event. Four national magazines covered the event. Despite the Santa Barbara location, it rained. Doug said the coolest car in attendance was a Daytona violet 850CSi.

CPN Rally

This is not a Club event but will be held June 5-8 on Whidbey Island. This used to be a vintage rally but it now accepts newer cars too.

Mt. Rainier Tour

There will be two separate tours, May 17th and 18th. They will start in Federal Way and probably go up to Paradise and back.

Mt. Vernon Tour

There will be a promo in the June Zundfolge. The route will be mostly the same as last year, which was very popular. The Tour Governance Policy will be strictly enforced.

LeMay Tour

Doug noted that his isn’t really a tour. The event is September 20th. There may be some sort of group drive to the location. Mary Hovenkotter had a tour route from Issaquah that might be used.

TRACK REPORT

The track events are in the red so far this year. This is largely because the Instructors’ Clinic always loses money. We will make it up and more with coming events.

The April 20th track day was full at $95 per person. The June 8th day is $125 each and we can accommodate 84 people. There are already 90 reservations.

Thunderhill is half full (32 people). The July 13 PR date will be in the May Zundfolge. The Laguna Seca event will have a promo in the June Zundfolge. We will probably allow 60 people at Laguna. The track rental is going to be $10,000 for a weekday.

Bill Spornitz suggested prepaying the insurance for all the remaining track dates for 2003. This was approved by the Board.

Chris Chow and Tom Cox are working on an accident avoidance drill system. The Board approved an amount not-to-exceed $500 to build it. The Club’s trailer at Bremerton was vandalized. Tom Cox and Wes will check on the trailer and its contents this weekend.

SIG REPORT

We have been invited to participate in the Greenwood Auto Show. Michael Ellis, the event chair, is a Club member. There will be a promo in Zundfolge. There are 20 spots reserved for BMWs.

Seattle 7’s Matthew Mar reports that they will have a Detailing event in partnership with Phil Smart on July 13th. Two complete details will be raffled with proceed going to Children’s Hospital. The date has changed since last month.

The issue of insurance for SIG tours was discussed. It was decided that insurance isn’t necessary. The Z SIG is having their ‘Buff and Bond’ session this weekend.

The 02 SIG is having a drive this Sunday. On June 1st the 02s are having another tour up Chuckanut Drive. Later, they’re having a tech session. On July 28th, the 02 Fest will be held the day after our Concours. The chapter will be co-sponsoring this event again and will provide the insurance at a cost of $108. Brian Capp is now the head of the 02 SIG.

BANQUET

De-Anna is looking at January 17, 24 or 31, 2004 for the event. It will likely be held at the Design Center in Seattle’s Georgetown area. The program will be, "BMW Legends Night"

David reported he picked up the remaining checks from the last banquet from Kevin Chow. There were more checks than expected.

CONCOURS

Lance reported that BMW Seattle has confirmed as the sponsor for the trophies. Canadians will be encouraged to participate again by being able to pay in Canadian dollars. We will not be providing food, except for the volunteers, since there are food vendors nearby.

The location is Cedar River Park in Renton. The local Renton paper is already promoting our participation. Lance’s new job prevents him from going out to hustle up vendors; others are encouraged to do so.

ZUNDFOLGE

Lucetta said the deadline for the June issue is this coming Tuesday, May 6th. The E28 SIG will be the next one featured in the Zundfolge. Follow-up anecdotes are being solicited from rally participants.

Jim Millet reported that we have our first Portland-area advertiser. Armadillo has made a one year commitment to advertise. BMW Seattle will be taking an additional half page besides there inside front cover they currently occupy.

ROSTER

Doug Adams, Jr. reported that membership is holding about even. We had 43 new members last month but lost about an equal number. Current membership stands at 3120.

WEB SITE

Dale Beuning wasn’t present.
