I’ve liked the E36 ever since I first saw one at its release in my home country of the United Kingdom. Of course, UK car prices and salaries are ridiculously divergent, so owning one was only a dream. The E36 M3 was, for a long time, my “realistic dream” car - that is, something I could potentially afford to own one day (any red Ferrari being my ultimate and probably unrealistic dream car).
Before I purchased the car, my then-fiancée was growing weary of my enthusiasm every time I saw one on the road. Finally she forced me to test-drive one, but before we set out that fateful day of May 5th 1999, I warned it could be a long day at the dealership; I knew that if I drove one, I’d buy it. I did. I still get the same excitement from a healthy romp on the go pedal as I did 6 years ago.
The car spent its first 3 years completely stock. Then, with 40K on the clock, the suspension was refreshed with what's on the list today. Other modifications followed incrementally over time, most of which were due to driving at lapping days. The most recent addition was the Sparco seats - which my cat, Safi, finds quite comfortable!
Aside from the mods, the car has needed very little work. A broken seat heater was fixed after my back started to get burnt. The failing power steering hose "feature" was fixed with all new hoses at 96,000 miles. Wherever possible, all maintenance was done by me.
