This car was ordered in July 1995. At the time I had an E36 M3 that I had taken delivery of a year before (one of the first cars in the Seattle area). When I read about the LTW in the Roundel, I became somewhat obsessed with owning one. BMW of Bellevue took my money to order one, and thus began 6 months of not really knowing if I was getting a car or not. Eventually I had to spend some face time with BMW's VP of sales for the West Coast to make sure a car was headed my way. It arrived on Dec. 27, 1995, and on driving it of the lot it was obviously different--and better--than my "stock" E36 M3. This car became primarly a track car from day one. After one memorable day at Portland I named the car PeeKay for "Porsche Killer." In 1999 it was converted to SCCA T1 racing specs, and briefly campaigned on the west coast against the Vipers and Z06 Corvettes that dominate T1 racing. It also ran in Solo II briefly (two national tours). Unfortunately the SCCA doesn't allow the car to race in a class where it might be competitive, so I stopped racing it after the Rose Cup last year. Over the past year the car has mostly sat in my driveway while I focused on driving my Formula Mazda. Driving impressions: Without a doubt this is the sweetest, best handling race car I have ever driven. The engine is mostly stock, so the car doesn't make tons of horsepower, but it can carry significant speed through the turns, and can outbrake almost any other sedan I've ever gone up against. Its main strengths are balance and forgiveness. In long sweeping turns it's a piece of cake to steer the car with my right foot. If it has any bad side at all it's that it's too forgiving a car to really develop my racing skills. I had gotten pretty good driving this car before I took up Formula Cars where I learned that I had developed way too many bad habits driving PeeKay: the car was so forgiving that it was easy to dump the gas, stomp on the brakes, or jerk the wheel without something bad happening. It's just pretty hard to upset the car. It's a Lazy Boy on wheels compared to my Formula Mazda. To my mind this is the finest BMW ever built. If you've never driven one you can't really appreciate how different they are from the "regular" E36 M3. I still have the original wing from this car, as well as some other misc parts.
