The Calder Art Car was so well received that another was commissioned for the 1976 Le Mans race.  Again an American artist was chosen: Frank Stella.  Stella's Art Car consists of a black and white grid which resembles oversize graph paper.  As Stella put it, "My design is like a blueprint transferred to the car's body."  Stella is renowned as a representative of "Hard Edge" painting.  Stella says of his Art Car, "The resulting color pattern is intended to give the BMW 3.0 CSL an appealing decorative touch."  The Stella car competed in the 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans but did not finish well.
