In 1986, BMW went back to an American artist: Robert Rauschenberg. Like the Fuchs car, Rauschenberg painted a street 635 CSi. Rauschenberg creates a combination collage and abstract painting, thus his name for his work: Combine Painting. Part of Rauschenberg's technique is to use photographic methods to transfer images to the surface, in this case, the car's paint.
The driver's door shows "Man of the World" by Bronzino. Photos of trees and swamp grass highlight the environmental problems of automobiles. The wheel covers are antique plates.
Rauschenberg enjoyed creating his Art Car so much, he followed with a series, using the same images, but transferred to aluminum panels rather than another 6 Series. This six part series is known as "Beamer Series." Evidently, no one told Rauschenberg he was painting a Bimmer not a Beamer.
