While Kayama was painting his 535i in Japan, César Manrique was working on a 730i in Europe.  Manrique is a painter, designer, sculptor and architect who was born in the Canary Islands.  He is also an environmentalist, landscape designer and conservationist.  And he sees cars as an essential part of our daily lives.  Most of Manrique's paintings share the theme of "Geology and Volcanism."  He typically shows the interplay between light and lava.

"That explains my idea of painting the BMW car to appear as if it were gliding through space without encountering any form or resistance."  The artist has said he tried "to unite the notions of speed and aerodynamics with the concept of aesthetic appeal in one and the same object."  Manrique's Art Car, with its sweeping strokes and bright colors, suggest effortless movement.
