Matazo Kayama was commissioned in 1990 to create an Art Car from a 535i. Kayama had been trained as a painter and had also studied traditional Japanese art forms, such as screen painting. Kayama's breakthrough was combining modern art with traditional Japanese art forms.
The BMW project was particularly difficult for Kayama because of the three dimensional nature of the car. Kayama took up the traditional subjects of "Snow, Moon and Cherry Blossom" for his Art Car. But the execution was anything but traditional. Over the silver car, he airbrushed blue paint. Then he worked using traditional Japanese techniques of metal cutting and foil printing. Small pieces of silver, gold and aluminum foil were transferred to the car's body.
The Kayama Art Car is a static piece and not intended for driving.
