Italian Sandro Chia painted a prototype 3 Series race car in 1992. Chia claims that almost any surface calls out to him, "paint me", "paint me." According to Chia, "The automobile is a coveted social object and many eyes are upon it. People watch when a car passes by. The Art Car I have worked on here reflects their gaze. Like a mirror, it confronts people who look at it." Upon completion, Chia exclaimed, "I have created an image--a world! Look at anything hard enough and it turns into a face. And a face is a focal point of life and of the world."
